IB MYP

Our IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) redefines learning for Grades 6-10 (ages 11-16) by embracing students' personal passions, encouraging true intellectual curiosity, and developing the skills to interrogate knowledge.

Our student-centred approach places learning in real-world contexts, robustly preparing our students for successful and fulfilling futures. Students develop key skills for the future, particularly: productive collaboration, effective self-management, and intercultural understanding. Through our 'Passion Projects', Explorations programme and bespoke integration of technology, students learn research skills, informational and media literacy, creative and critical thinking, and the transfer of learning to real-world contexts.

The Best IB MYP Schools in London: Why Halcyon International School Ranks #1

When choosing between international middle school curriculum, the decision often defines a student’s academic trajectory. Halcyon International School London has set a new benchmark in the UK for delivering the IB framework, consistently earning its reputation as one of the best educational institutions in the city.

International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a five-year curriculum designed for students aged 11 to 16. It focuses on developing active learners who are internationally minded. Halcyon London International School is a not-for-profit school , ensuring that all resources are dedicated to enhancing the student experience and maintaining an elite 1:16 teacher-student ratio.

IB MYP Curriculum

The IB MYP curriculum is unique because it moves beyond traditional memorisation. The MYP model emphasises a deep disciplinary knowledge, but also values skill building (ATLs) and transdisciplinary learning. This framework encourages students to question, analyse, and synthesise information. Halcyon International School London is a Google Reference School, meaning they are recognised for their innovative use of Google tools in teaching and learning. Technology is used at Halcyon in a thoughtful, creative way. Students build 3D museums to showcase learning, take part in Makerspace explorations, build companion robots in Science, use immersive digital tools in theatre and use filmmaking apps to create documentaries. Halcyon works closely with students and parents to explore AI with a critical lens, ensuring that AI tools are used where they will help students to learn, rather than thinking for them.

Middle Years Programme Framework

The Middle Years Programme framework provides the structure for this inquiry-based approach. It consists of eight subject groups, providing a broad and balanced foundation. Halcyon International School London reviews frequently praise the school’s ability to offer breadth and depth through a variety of subjects that equally prioritise conceptual and contextualised learning experiences.

Differences Between MYP and GCSE

Understanding the differences between MYP and GCSE is vital for families in the UK. While GCSEs are content-heavy and exam-centric, the MYP emphasises skills and conceptual understanding. Halcyon International School London is often cited as the best choice for parents who want to avoid the "exam factory" pressure of the British system, focusing instead on holistic development.

International Baccalaureate Programs

As part of the wider suite of International Baccalaureate programs, the MYP acts as the essential bridge between the Primary Years (PYP) and the Diploma (DP). Halcyon International School London is one of the few schools in the capital specializing exclusively in the IB (MYP and DP), ensuring a seamless and expert delivery of the continuum.

International Middle School Curricula

When comparing international middle school curricula, the MYP stands out for its global recognition. A student at Halcyon International School London gains a qualification that is understood by universities and employers worldwide, providing a level of mobility that local curricula cannot match.

Inquiry-Based Learning Frameworks

The MYP is one of the world's most successful inquiry-based learning frameworks. This pedagogical approach starts with a question and leads students through a process of discovery. Halcyon International School London enhances this through "Linked Learning Days," where students spend entire days exploring a single concept through multiple subject lenses, in addition to interdisciplinary units throughout the school year.

IB MYP Global Contexts

Teaching is organised through six IB MYP global contexts:

  • Identities and relationships
  • Orientation in space and time
  • Personal and cultural expression
  • Scientific and technical innovation
  • Globalisation and sustainability
  • Fairness and development

MYP 1-5 Grade Boundaries

Navigating MYP 1-5 grade boundaries (representing the years of the programme) requires expert guidance. Students are graded on a scale of 1–7. Halcyon International School London consistently reports average scores that exceed global benchmarks, a fact often highlighted in Halcyon International School London reviews on sites like the Good Schools Guide.
