Halcyon Receives Eco School Green Flag Award

We are proud to announce that Halcyon has been recognised with the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award.

The award reflects our school-wide commitment to the environment. We regularly run assemblies; invite guest speakers to share knowledge on climate change and biodiversity; serve vegetarian lunches and partner with organisations to reduce our footprint and build a greener community.

The award specifically recognises the hard work of our student-run Eco Committee, facilitated by Dr Lodhi.

Below, Dr Lodhi reflects on the committee's growth, alongside words from Grade 12 student Sophia.

Our Eco Committee has grown considerably, with last year having one of our largest student groups. Achieving the Eco Schools Green Flag award with distinction is a great honour.

This year we have new members joining and are already setting ambitious goals. The committee has chosen to continue with Global Citizenship as well as two new targets: Marine Conservation and Biodiversity, making great use of our new rooftop garden. These targets will guide upcoming eco events and campaigns.

One of our most successful student-led projects last year was the Fast Fashion awareness campaign. Sophia, Grade 12, shares her experience.

"For Halcyon's Fast Fashion February last year, Eco Committee started planning in early February after Veganuary, working closely with volunteers, other teachers and student council members. We divided tasks amongst ourselves: I made the presentation, Leo and Tilly presented it, and Alex ran the survey and organised the results for the slideshow and helped deliver the presentation.

"Many eco members helped by gathering responses and advertising the project on our school TVs, which made preparation enjoyable even when juggling other schoolwork.

"During lunch meetings, we shared the presentation, discussed Halcyon's approach to fast fashion and coordinated music for the fashion show runway, building our teamwork skills and knowledge of sustainable fashion."
