Global Space Design competition
Earlier this year, space enthusiasts Nima B and Leo R, soared to victory in the Global Space Design Competition. Their award-winning design for an orbital space settlement in Low Earth Orbit garnered significant acclaim.
As a result of their outstanding achievement, Nima and Leo were selected as two of the eight members from amongst all competing teams to participate in the prestigious International Space Settlement Design Competition.
This esteemed event was held at the NASA Kennedy Space Centre, offering them a remarkable opportunity to showcase their talents on an international stage.
Leo (Grade 12) reports on his time at NASA, below.
"Hi All! Over the summer holidays, I competed in the International Space Settlement Design Competition (ISSDC) held at NASA Kennedy Space Station. I competed with and against over 200 students from all over the world, including South America, Asia and even Africa.
The competition was held over three days and made us design a space settlement on the Moon, specifically a data centre meant to backup all of Earth’s data. We worked in teams of 60 to fulfil a design proposal given to us by the competition hosts and tirelessly worked to try to win. Unfortunately, we came just short, taking the runner-up spot.
While the competition was certainly the highlight of the experience for me, it was also a blast to go around Florida and explore, we were able to see the wildlife, beaches and much more. We also got to see a Falcon 9 launch live from NASA, which is something I won’t forget for a while.
This experience was all possible because of my student-led ECA for the UK Space Design Competition, if you’re the least bit interested in a trip like this or just want something to add to your CV feel free to come talk to me. Have a great school year!
