Halcyon Economics Society presented their first public event inviting the esteemed Professor of Economics Denise Hawkes of King's College London, who presented on the pressing issue of climate change and its economic impact on vulnerable communities.

Below Nathaniel in G11 shares the genesis of the Halcyon Economic Society, how he and HES co-founder Raj have managed to secure such esteemed guest speakers, and what we can expect for next year's guest series!

"This week we had the privilege of hosting Professor Denise Hawkes, a distinguished speaker from the King’s College London. Her lecture covered one of the most pressing issues of today, the impact of the climate crisis on economic growth, drawing on her experience with the EU-funded MEDiate project, which aims to enhance disaster risk assessment and improve disaster risk management and governance. Her work on this project was based in Essex which served as a testbed for flood risk mitigation strategies. Within this she talked about considering different demographics when planning, for example making greater allowances for elderly residents who are more vulnerable.

"Our vision with the Halcyon Economics Society since its inception is to share our passion for economics with the greater Halcyon community, including students, but parents and teachers. This vision was evident in both the mixture of students, teachers and parents who attended, but also in that we had students taking subjects other than economics attend. As a new start-up, one of our challenges was securing speakers to visit our school, and we did this by strategically targeting top universities in London and by finding professors whose research we thought would be fascinating to our community, and emailing them expressing our enthusiasm for them to speak at our school.

"Looking ahead, after a successful half term hosting two guest speakers, we aim to expand our horizons by introducing an interactive economics competition where students can showcase their skills. Stay tuned!"
