The Halcyon Launchpad Series: Arabella, G10

The Halcyon Launchpad Series: Arabella, G10

We sat down with three of our students who have officially secured exciting professional opportunities starting in the coming months. While their career paths vary—spanning economics, technology, and journalism—each student shared a common drive to turn their academic passions into real-world impact.

Rounding off our Halcyon Launchpad Series with Grade 10 student Arabella, who was recently offered an internship at The Telegraph.

When Arabella applied for the Telegraph Media Literacy Programme, she put her interest in pursuing a future in journalism front and center. She also expressed her eagerness to understand the inner workings of a global media organisation and how it has shifted in a fast-paced digital age.

Arabella is looking forward to learning from specialist journalists across the newsroom who report on a range of topics, from fashion and politics to travel and international affairs. She is also eager to hear from experts about their roles and the trajectories of their careers. Through this experience, she hopes to gain a deeper understanding of the modern production of different types of media, ranging from written articles in print to videos and podcasts and critical media.

One issue that is particularly prominent today, and directly affects the general public, is bias in the media. Arabella is interested in investigating the nuances of this bias and the role it plays across the industry to better understand how to deliver objective and reliable information.

Arabella noted that for anyone looking to enter the field of journalism, she would recommend looking out for opportunities that allow you to gain practical experience and engage with people with expertise who can provide unique advice on breaking into the industry. She believes that proactive networking is essential for any aspiring reporter.

Wishing Arabella the best in her internship!
