UN International Women and Girls in Science Day
This week, our community came together to celebrate UN International Women and Girls in Science Day. It was a team effort, with teachers and students collaborating in the lab, including our dedicated Women in STEM student ambassadors
The day culminated in an assembly featuring four remarkable speakers, who shared their personal journeys and insights navigating into STEM careers.
Science researcher, Dr. Cristina Pina, presented a sobering statistic: 70 percent of the public still perceives girls' roles primarily in the Arts sector. Dr. Pina countered this perception by sharing her groundbreaking research in blood stem cell development, where she uses innovative 3D modelling to track blood cell development. Her work holds promise for life-saving treatments for patients with blood diseases.
We were also honoured to welcome Lila Ibrahim, Chief Operating Officer of DeepMind, whose organisation has revolutionised scientific research through Artificial Intelligence. Lila spoke about DeepMind's breakthrough protein-folding project AlphaFold, which led to two of her colleagues receiving the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Ibrahim's passionate advocacy for diversity in STEM and her message encouraging students to be bold, curious, and fearless in tackling global challenges resonated deeply with our students.
The event was made particularly special by the participation of Halcyon alumna Defne Karagul (Class of 2023) and Women in STEM ambassador Chloe Bailey, a PhD Researcher in Biochemistry. Their presence demonstrated to our students the direct pathway from Halcyon to successful careers in science.
As Defne shares about how Halcyon fostered a passion for STEM: "Definitely through teachers like Ms Liao and Ms Bartholomew - having that representation around me - as well as making conscious efforts to engage everybody in the class - it definitely played a big part in helping me progress in this field."
This celebration not only highlighted the achievements of women in STEM but also reinforced our commitment to incubating next generation of scientists. Through such events, we continue to challenge perceptions and inspire our students to pursue their passions in all fields of study.
