Veganuary At Halcyon

At Halcyon, we are proud of our commitment to sustainability, championed by our Eco Committee and reinforced through policies such as being a vegetarian school.

Halcyon Eco Committee teacher, Dr. Lodhi, discusses Veganuary at the school and offers tips on everyday sustainability, below.

Each year, we strive to be more intentional with our actions. The Halcyon Eco Committee collaborated with our Catering Manager to create a delicious Vegan Lunch Menu for Veganuary.

The lunch was a resounding success, appreciated by staff and students. Treats included pumpkin pie and bean goulash with homemade bread. Eco committee members baked vegan dishes to raise awareness and funds for Animal Aid.

We shared impactful Veganuary facts. Making healthier choices has improved my wellbeing, with fewer snack options and more vegan choices in supermarkets. One coffee shop chain even offered a free vegan cookie when asked.

Top 5 Tips for Climate Action by Reducing Animal Product Consumption:

  1. Adopt a Flexitarian or Plant-Based Diet Gradually reduce meat and dairy (e.g., Meatless Mondays). Prioritise low-impact proteins like lentils, beans, tofu, and tempeh. Replace high-emission foods with lower-impact alternatives.
  2. Choose Local & Seasonal Plant-Based Foods Buy locally grown produce to reduce transport emissions. Support farmers' markets and choose seasonal items to minimise refrigeration and transport costs.
  3. Minimise Food Waste Plan meals to prevent overbuying. Store plant-based foods properly, use leftovers creatively, and compost food scraps to reduce landfill methane emissions.
  4. Support Sustainable & Ethical Brands Select organic and regenerative plant-based products. Choose companies prioritising low-carbon production and look for fair-trade and B Corp-certified brands.
  5. Advocate & Educate Share your plant-based journey. Encourage workplaces and schools to offer more plant-based options.
